Gionna “Gigi” Maduro, a student from the University of West Florida (UWF), recently represented Dutch Caribbean students at an event in Miami. This occasion coincided with the visit of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. It showcased UWF’s growing ties with the Dutch Caribbean.
During the Dutch Caribbean Student Session, Gigi delivered welcome remarks. This gathering included students, university leaders, and government officials who shared their experiences and discussed future opportunities within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
“Meeting the royal couple was a dream come true,” Gigi shared. “I never expected to speak in front of such an influential audience during my senior year at UWF.” Her speech highlighted the hurdles faced by students studying abroad and celebrated their strength in overcoming these obstacles.
“We Dutch Caribbean students know how to turn challenges into opportunities,” she remarked. This sentiment resonates with students dealing with academic pressures and cultural adjustments while pursuing higher education.
Gigi is among several Dutch Caribbean students at UWF who actively participate in campus life, taking on roles in student government and ambassador programs. Her recognition as a welcome speaker reflects her leadership and the university’s commitment to building connections in Aruba, Curaçao, and the Netherlands.

According to a 2022 report, nearly 30% of Caribbean students aim to study abroad, highlighting this growing trend.
