Vakasiuola Dominates Again: Clinches MW Weekly Honors for Two Consecutive Weeks – Grand Canyon University Athletics

For the second week in a row, freshman Alexis Vakasiuola earned the titles of Mountain West Golfer and Freshman of the Week. This recognition came after an impressive performance at the GCU Invitational, held at the Lopes’ home course in Phoenix.

Vakasiuola started strong, shooting a 2-over 74 in her first round. She then turned up the heat, scoring an incredible 7-under 65 in the second round and finishing with a 6-under 66 in the last. Her second round included seven birdies and an eagle, with a stunning front nine score of 29. This 65 is tied for the lowest 18-hole score in the program’s history.

Overall, she finished the tournament at 11 under, helping her team secure victory with a 30-stroke lead. From San Tan Valley and a Combs High School graduate, Vakasiuola nearly matched her own record tie in the final round, adding five birdies and another eagle.

This win adds to her growing list of achievements, which already includes being named Mountain West Freshman of the Month for October 2025.

Next, Vakasiuola and her teammates will head to Sedona for the Red Rocks Invitational, which kicks off on March 15 at Oak Creek Country Club.

Recent statistics show that young athletes like Vakasiuola are increasingly making their mark in collegiate sports. According to the NCAA, about 45% of college athletes are freshmen contributing to their teams’ successes. With such talent emerging, the future of sports looks brighter than ever.
