VALDOSTA, Ga. – This Thanksgiving, L.A.M.P. (Lowndes Associated Ministries to People) teamed up with 20 local churches and community groups to help families in Valdosta. However, the demand for food far exceeded the donations.
Food was distributed at five locations, but many sites ran out long before the end of the day. At West Hill Avenue Church of Christ, volunteers ran out of food before noon, even with families lining up an hour beforehand. “People were eager and showed up early, but we just couldn’t keep up with the need,” said Yurshema Flanders, the Executive Director of L.A.M.P.
Recent statistics show a troubling trend regarding food insecurity. A report from the USDA revealed that around 10.5% of U.S. households were food insecure at some point in 2021. With rising costs and inflation, this number could rise. Experts predict communities will face threats to food availability in the coming months, making organizations like L.A.M.P. crucial.
The holiday season isn’t just about one day. Demand for food assistance continues, and volunteers are feeling overwhelmed. Many local leaders stress the importance of sustained community support. “People are hungry, and we need to be prepared to help them beyond just holidays,” said one local organizer.
