LAREDO, Tex. – Valentine’s Day is almost here, and floral shops are buzzing with excitement. This holiday is one of their busiest times.
Street vendors are also preparing for the day. They join in the hustle, offering flowers and gifts for those who need something special at the last minute.
Veronica Valdez owns Narvaez Flower and Gift Shop. She shares that her team starts getting ready months ahead. “By December, we’re ordering flowers because they sell out quickly. Timing is crucial,” she says.
Valdez explains that customers often look for more than just flowers. Stuffed animals, especially teddy bears, are popular gifts too. However, one item stands out each year: roses. “Roses and anything red symbolize love. That’s what everyone wants in February,” she adds.
For those looking to sell on the streets, it’s important to have the right permits. Noraida Negron from the City of Laredo emphasizes the need for proper business permission. She notes that both the vendor and the property owner must fill out the necessary applications.
Permit costs vary. “It’s $100 for property owners. If you’re selling on someone else’s property, it costs about $500. There are also seasonal options, like $200 a year or $50 for a single event,” Negron explains.
