Vancouver, B.C. – Big news from the Vancouver Canucks! General Manager Patrik Allvin announced a trade with the San Jose Sharks. The Canucks received Cole Clayton, along with second-round picks for the 2026 and 2027 NHL Entry Drafts, in exchange for Kiefer Sherwood.
“We appreciate Kiefer’s hard work and commitment to the team,” Allvin stated. “This move is part of our rebuilding strategy. We’re excited to add Cole and those two draft picks to strengthen our future.” Clayton, a right-shot defenseman, will join the Abbotsford team.
At 25, Clayton has played 33 games with the San Jose Barracuda this season, scoring five points. In his AHL career, he has played 257 games and recorded 66 points. Known for his solid defensive skills, he stands 6’2″ and weighs 200 lbs. He also has playoff experience, with one goal and a +2 plus/minus in 14 Calder Cup games.
Before going pro, Clayton spent four seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL. He stood out in the 2020-21 season, leading all WHL defensemen with nine goals and 30 points. He originally joined the Sharks as an undrafted free agent in 2025.
With this trade, the Canucks now have a total of seven picks in the 2026 Draft and eight in the 2027 Draft, setting the stage for future growth.
Interestingly, teams often make such moves to build for the future. According to a recent study by the NHL, teams with more draft picks typically perform better in the long run. This could be a pivotal moment for the Canucks as they reshape their roster.
Fan reactions have varied online, with some excited about the new talent, while others express concern over losing Sherwood. Social media has lit up with discussions around the trade, highlighting the fans’ hopes for a brighter future with Clayton.
This kind of trade marks a strategy often seen in the league—teams rebuilding focus on acquiring young prospects and draft picks to foster long-term success.
