Healthcare Job Growth in West Virginia
As job opportunities dwindle in West Virginia, healthcare is stepping up as a vital source of employment. Vandalia Health, one of the state’s largest employers, plays a crucial role in this shift.
Dave Ramsey, the president and CEO of Vandalia Health, shared insights at a recent Chamber of Commerce summit. He pointed out that while sectors like mining, manufacturing, and hospitality are seeing declines, healthcare is on the rise. In fact, recent data indicates that healthcare employment is the only area with growth in the last 14 months.
Ramsey emphasized the need for local access to medical care. “Recruiting talent from outside the state can be challenging,” he said. “We need to educate and cultivate our own healthcare professionals.” This strategy is already in motion, with local medical facilities playing a key role in training future healthcare workers.
Vandalia Health is dedicated to this mission. Each day, numerous students undergo clinical rotations at their facilities. The results speak for themselves: about 70% of recent graduates from their programs have chosen to stay in West Virginia to practice medicine.
The focus on healthcare isn’t just about immediate needs. Ramsey also highlighted ongoing construction projects that are creating jobs. Approximately 500 construction jobs are being generated, and once completed, an additional 250 to 300 jobs will be available across the state.
This growth in healthcare not only supports the economy but also ensures that communities have essential medical services. As the landscape of employment changes, West Virginia’s commitment to nurturing its healthcare workforce offers hope for a stronger future.
