New Delhi: Indian Railways is making big strides with its ambitious modernization program. At the heart of this effort is the launch of Vande Bharat 4.0 trains, designed not only for Indian passengers but also for export to other countries.
During the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) 2025, Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that Vande Bharat 4.0 will showcase world-class technology. He stated that passenger comfort will be the top priority. “The transformation we’ve seen in Indian Railways over the last 11 years is impressive,” he noted, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
The new Vande Bharat trains will feature advanced toilets, comfortable seating, and superior craftsmanship. They are expected to hit the tracks within 18 months. The government plans to bolster the rail network significantly, aiming to establish about 7,000 kilometers of dedicated passenger corridors by 2047, part of the Viksit Bharat vision.
Since 2014, Indian Railways has laid 35,000 kilometers of new tracks and electrified 46,000 kilometers. Currently, the fleet includes 156 Vande Bharat Express trains, 30 Amrit Bharat Express trains, and four Namo Bharat trains.
Experts suggest that this modernization is vital as the demand for railway travel grows. According to the Indian Ministry of Railways, passenger numbers are expected to reach 2 billion by 2024. This highlights the pressing need for better infrastructure and services.
