Vande Bharat at 7: Discover How India’s Homegrown Train Redefined Modern Travel

The Vande Bharat Express marks its seventh anniversary today. Launched by Indian Railways on February 15, 2019, the first train ran between New Delhi and Varanasi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was there to celebrate this milestone, part of India’s push for self-reliance under the ‘Make In India’ initiative.

These trains are fully designed and made in India, with production centered at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. Currently, there are 166 Vande Bharat trains, including chair cars and newly introduced sleeper coaches.

Since its debut, the Vande Bharat Express has received numerous upgrades, boosting both safety and efficiency. The latest improvements have focused on reducing travel times and enhancing passenger experiences with modern amenities.

As of September 2023, new routes were added, expanding the network further. Examples include the Udaipur-Jaipur and Hyderabad-Bengaluru services, among others.

Looking forward, the government plans to release 400 new Vande Bharat trains within three years, as announced in the 2022-23 Union Budget. The focus will be on innovation and safety, with the recently introduced Vande Bharat 2.0 featuring advanced collision avoidance systems called KAVACH.

Public reception has generally been positive, with social media buzzing about the comfort and speed of these trains. Passengers often share their travel experiences online, highlighting the convenience of high-speed rail travel in India. The Vande Bharat Express continues to represent a significant shift in Indian rail transport, promoting a new era of efficient and modern travel.
