Vande Bharat Food Scandal: IRCTC Fined and Vendor Fired After Shocking Worms Video—Watch Now!

Indian Railways recently fined IRCTC ₹10 lakh after a troubling incident on the Vande Bharat Express, where a passenger found live worms in their meal. This incident, recorded in a viral video, shows the passenger confronting staff who tried to dismiss the concern as simply “kesar” (saffron).

This complaint was made on March 15 during the journey from Patna to Tatanagar. The Railways responded by not only penalizing IRCTC but also imposing a ₹50 lakh fine on the catering contractor and terminating their contract. Officials emphasized that food quality and passenger safety are their top priorities.

Despite serving approximately 58 crore meals a year, the Railways’ complaint rate is noticeably low at around 0.0008%. Over the last three years, ₹2.6 crore in penalties have been levied due to complaints, indicating an increase in accountability for onboard services. However, in 2025, there were reported instances of staff assaulting passengers, a situation that authorities took seriously with legal actions.

In light of this recent incident, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced new reforms under the “Reform Express” initiative, with a focus on enhancing passenger convenience and improving logistics efficiency in cargo operations. Notably, while India is one of the largest salt producers globally, only about 9.2 million tonnes out of 35 million tonnes produced annually are transported by rail. This presents a significant opportunity for growth in logistics.

The incident sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many highlighting ongoing issues with catering services on public transport. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining high standards in rail travel, as public safety and satisfaction are paramount.
