NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A typical morning at Vanderbilt University took a surprising turn when a delivery driver became involved in a violent incident.
Brandi Helton, 35, who was working as an Amazon Flex driver, allegedly assaulted a Metro Transportation Management officer. Amazon Flex allows people to deliver packages using their own vehicles.
The altercation began when Helton was directed to stop her vehicle on Garland Avenue due to ongoing construction. Frustrated after waiting, she drove through an intersection, hitting the officer in the knee. The officer screamed for her to stop, but Helton reversed her car, exited it, and attacked the officer, punch after punch. Witnesses were taken aback, with one local worker expressing concern over the chaos.
“Usually, drivers follow directions,” Raquel said. “This was pretty dramatic. People need to be mindful of their surroundings.”
Vanderbilt University Police were alerted, and they soon arrested Helton. Court documents reveal she confessed to hitting the officer but denied striking her with the vehicle. She faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was released on bail after a few hours.
The officer was taken to a hospital, but her condition remains unclear.
Amazon has acknowledged the incident and stated they are working with authorities. Due to the circumstances, Helton is no longer eligible to deliver packages through the Amazon Flex program. She is expected to appear in court next month.
This event raises questions about safety for both delivery drivers and the traffic officials who regulate them. According to a recent study, there have been increasing incidents of aggressive behavior by drivers on the roads, with over 50% of traffic officers reporting encounters with violent drivers in the past year. Experts stress the importance of communication and patience in such situations to prevent escalations like this one.
Delivering packages may seem routine, but incidents like these remind us all to stay alert and considerate on the road.
