FORT MYERS, FLA. — North Carolina’s basketball team showcased their skills with a solid win over St. Bonaventure, 85-70, during the Fort Myers Tip-Off. This victory marked their sixth straight win of the season, the best start since the 2016-17 NCAA championship year.
Henri Veesaar and Caleb Wilson led the Tar Heels, both achieving impressive double-doubles. Veesaar scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Wilson followed with 20 points and 12 boards. This performance by the pair was crucial as Carolina pulled away in the second half.
Despite a close first half, where Carolina only led by two points at 35-33, their second half was a turning point. They shot an impressive 53.3% from the field and outscored St. Bonaventure 50-37 after halftime.
Free throws were another highlight, with UNC sinking 21 out of 27, while they also dominated the boards, out-rebounding SBU 40-31. Overhead coach Hubert Davis’s five seasons, the team has seen marked success whenever they hit at least half of their shots, going 39-1 in such games.
Interestingly, this start reflects a broader trend in college basketball where teams that maintain solid shooting percentages often rise through the ranks. According to a recent NCAA report, teams that consistently exceed a 50% field goal success rate win about 70% of their games.
Carolina’s strong debut this season has fans excited, reminiscent of their past successful campaigns. They’ll face Michigan State next on Thanksgiving Thursday, a matchup that promises to test their early-season form.
