Gamecocks Secure Win Against Queens University
The South Carolina men’s soccer team clinched a 1-0 victory over Queens University Charlotte, wrapping up their non-conference games with a strong showing at Stone Stadium. Alejandro Velazquez-Lopez scored the lone goal in the 77th minute, bringing his season total to three goals and marking his second game-winner.
South Carolina dominated the night, taking 14 shots compared to the Royals’ seven. They also led in corner kicks, 8-2. The Gamecocks came out strong, starting with a free kick just four minutes in, although it was blocked. They quickly established control but couldn’t find the net initially.
In the first half, they had several close chances. Loic Sany Kong nearly scored in the 22nd minute with a shot that forced a save from Queens’ goalkeeper. Tyler Trimnal and Samy Kolby also had attempts, but none hit the back of the net before halftime.
The Royals seemed to have a penalty kick opportunity in the 57th minute, but this was overturned after a video review. Shortly afterward, South Carolina almost capitalized when Ethan Ballek’s shot hit the woodwork.
Finally, Velazquez-Lopez delivered the decisive moment, skillfully maneuvering through defenders before shooting into the bottom right corner.
As the Gamecocks look forward, they’ll head on the road for a conference match against James Madison on Sunday at 7 p.m.
