This win is particularly special as it’s Venezuela’s first major international championship since they took gold at the 1959 Pan-American Games. In this match, six Venezuelan pitchers held Team USA’s strong offense to just three hits. They struck out ten players, and the Americans didn’t even have a runner past second base until Harper’s homer.
Maikel Garcia kicked off the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, and Wilyer Abreu added a solo home run. Garcia reflected on the team’s journey, saying, “People don’t believe in us. But we believe in each other.”
Eduardo Rodriguez was a star for Venezuela, only allowing one hit and striking out four batters in his 4 1/3 innings. Rodriguez expressed what it meant to pitch in front of his fans: “This is the greatest moment I’ve ever got on the mound. I can’t even tell you how I feel right now.”
On the other side, Team USA faced disappointment once again. They had lost the 2023 final to Japan with the same 3-2 score. Manager Mark DeRosa recognized the team’s emotional investment, saying, “This WBC has become a tidal wave of emotion for a lot of guys.”
In recent years, interest in the World Baseball Classic has grown significantly. According to a survey by the MLB, about 80% of players expressed pride in representing their countries. This trend underlines how much these international tournaments mean to athletes and fans alike.
