Venice Jury President Alexander Payne Explains and Defends This Year’s Award Winners

At the Venice Film Festival, Alexander Payne led the jury that awarded the prestigious Golden Lion to Jim Jarmusch for his film Father Mother Sister Brother. This choice came as a surprise to many, especially since Kaouther Ben Hania’s Gaza drama The Voice of Hind Rajab received a remarkable 23-minute, 40-second ovation. Instead of taking home the top prize, it secured the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize.

He emphasized how tough it was to narrow down 21 films to just eight, stating, “We loved many films… that’s the unfairness of festivals.” He noted that the jury had indeed discussed No Other Choice, highlighting its merits, yet ultimately, it didn’t make the final cut.
