Vera C. Rubin Observatory Unveils Record-Breaking Asteroid in Exciting First Week of Discoveries!

Scientists have recently found the fastest-spinning asteroid yet, known as 2025 MN45. This massive space rock is about 2,300 feet wide—larger than many skyscrapers on Earth—and spins around in just 113 seconds. That makes it the swiftest rotating asteroid over 1,640 feet in diameter.

The discovery comes from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which has been bustling with activity. In only seven nights, researchers uncovered thousands of hidden asteroids, a sign of the groundbreaking work that the observatory will continue for the next decade, aiming to create a time-lapse movie of the universe.

Asteroids are ancient remnants of our solar system, dating back about 4.5 billion years. By studying them, scientists can better understand how our cosmic neighborhood evolved. 2025 MN45 was detected using preliminary data from the observatory, which is still gearing up for its formal study. The speed and rotation of this asteroid give scientists clues about its composition.

Sarah Greenstreet, an assistant astronomer, mentioned, “This asteroid must be made of very strong material to keep it intact.” Most asteroids tend to be “rubble piles,” made up of many smaller fragments. However, 2025 MN45 seems to be different.

Fast-spinning asteroids often acquire this speed through collisions in space. There’s a chance that 2025 MN45 is a fragment of a once-larger rock that broke apart in a cosmic event. Most asteroids are found in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, but many fast-spinning ones are closer to Earth, making them easier to spot.

The newly released dataset from the Rubin Observatory includes not just 2025 MN45 but also 16 other “super-fast” rotators and two “ultra-fast” ones, each with spins faster than average. These findings were presented at a recent American Astronomical Society meeting. With about 1,900 new asteroid discoveries already from the Rubin’s initial data, many more will follow when the observatory officially kicks off its detailed survey.
