Verizon is making significant changes by announcing it will lay off over 13,000 employees, marking its largest job cut ever. This move comes as the company attempts to reduce costs and reposition itself in a competitive market.
The new CEO, Dan Schulman, explained in a message to employees that the current cost structure is limiting Verizon’s ability to enhance its services. He emphasized the need for simplification to better serve customers. Along with job cuts, Verizon plans to transition 179 retail stores from company-owned to franchised operations and close one store altogether.
A spokesperson added that these changes are part of a plan to prioritize operations and regain leadership in the communications sector. Recent reports highlighted that up to 15,000 jobs could be affected, primarily in the U.S.
Interestingly, Verizon has been under pressure in a shrinking market. Competitors, such as AT&T and T-Mobile, are attracting customers with lower prices and aggressive promotions. In the latest quarter, Verizon managed to gain only 44,000 new wireless subscribers, while T-Mobile outperformed with over 1 million new additions.
Despite these layoffs, Schulman has announced a $20 million fund to help affected employees transition into new roles, especially in light of advancements in artificial intelligence. Notably, he clarified that the layoffs are not due to the use of AI technologies.
Verizon has a history of restructuring to stay competitive. Over the past three years, it has cut almost 20,000 jobs. The company also invested heavily, spending $52 billion in a spectrum auction to enhance its 5G network, along with recent acquisitions totaling around $26 billion.
