ABBEVILLE, KATC – On a regular Monday, most kids are heading to school. But today, 13-year-old Keelan Duncan is diving into the working world. He’s getting a taste of what a job is like, an experience that could influence his future.
Keelan, an eighth grader at Vermilion Charter Academy, had the chance to shadow workers at Acadian Contractors, a construction company in Abbeville. This opportunity is part of a new program that helps students explore careers based on their interests.
“I was shadowing an employee, and she showed me around. I learned about the work at Acadian Contractors and what a typical day looks like,” Keelan shared.
This program is a first for Vermilion Charter Academy. It allows students to look into various careers. During his visit to Acadian Contractors, Keelan learned about safety in construction and observed different jobs within the company.
“I got to see how different jobs impact the world,” Keelan said, finding it “pretty cool” to see how the construction industry operates.
Lyle Collins, the Superintendent at Acadian Contractors, explained the company’s work to Keelan. “We handle construction by loading, adding, and gathering materials offshore,” Collins described. He even demonstrated how a machine that compresses air functions.
Keelan also explored multiple career roles at the company. Cecily Hebert, the land personnel coordinator, emphasized the program’s importance in revealing a range of job options to students. “We have fitters, riggers, welders, craftsmen, and rig welders. I’m thrilled to show young people what we do here,” Hebert said.
When asked about his career dreams, Keelan admitted he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do yet. However, after spending time at Acadian Contractors, he feels more informed about what’s available.
The pilot program at Vermilion Charter Academy will allow students to continue discovering various career paths, aiding them in making thoughtful choices for their futures.
