Vermont Ski Resort Hosts Protests as JD Vance’s Family Vacation Sparks Controversy

WAITSFIELD, Vt. — On Saturday, hundreds gathered to protest Vice President JD Vance near a ski resort in Vermont, where he was set to vacation with his family. This demonstration followed an intense Oval Office conversation about Ukraine, where Vance had a heated exchange with President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Many protesters waved signs expressing support for Ukraine, while others showcased Palestinian flags and advocated for immigrant rights. The gatherings spanned both sides of Route 100 in Waitsfield, drawing attention to various political issues.

Tekla Van Hoven from Waterbury was among the demonstrators. “Ski Russia because JD Vance has no friends in Vermont, but he’s got lots of friends in Russia,” she told WCAX-TV, expressing her discontent with the Vice President’s views.

Vance and his family had plans to ski at Sugarbush Resort. Although a few protesters showed up at the resort, resort spokesman John Bleh mentioned that they were peaceful and did not disrupt visitors.

On Thursday, Vermont’s Republican Governor Phil Scott welcomed Vance to the state, urging residents to be respectful during his family visit, regardless of political views. “Remember, he’s here with his young children,” Scott said.

Interestingly, a small group of supporters for Vance and Trump also held a “welcome rally” that day, contrasting the sentiments from the larger protest. This blend of protests and support highlights the varied opinions surrounding political figures today. It’s a reminder of how discussion and dissent coexist, even in serene settings like a ski vacation.
