A food processing plant in Vernon has agreed to pay over $6 million to settle charges linked to the tragic deaths of two workers in a nitrogen gas leak in December 2020. The company, California Ranch Foods, a subsidiary of Gold West Food Group, pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges following the incident.
The gas leak occurred on December 1, leading to the deaths of Baldemar Lopez, 56, and Maria Osyguss, 49. An investigation by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, or Cal/OSHA, revealed significant lapses in safety procedures and training regarding pressurized gas systems.
In addition to this criminal settlement, California Ranch Foods previously reached a $35 million civil settlement with the families of the deceased. As part of the plea deal, the company will spend the next three years on probation. They are required to invest $1.6 million in safety improvements at their facility and will pay a $1 million fine. They will also donate $4 million to local food banks and contribute $50,000 to Cal/OSHA’s Bureau of Investigations.
Cal/OSHA Chief Debra Lee emphasized the commitment to worker safety, stating, “When employers fail to protect their workers resulting in a preventable death, California will hold them accountable.” This reflects a broader trend in workplace safety, where regulatory agencies are increasingly focused on enforcing compliance to prevent future incidents.
According to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workplace fatalities have seen a 10% rise nationwide, underscoring the importance of stringent safety regulations. The investment in safety measures at California Ranch Foods is a crucial step towards turning this trend around.
