DND Park Washrooms
The public washrooms at the Department of National Defence Park (1451 Mission Rd.) will now be open daily from dawn to dusk, from mid-June to mid-October. This change comes as more visitors use the park, especially with a new playground expected in 2024.
Vandalism has been a concern. A 2021 incident caused $20,000 in damages, highlighting the need for better security. Councillor Akbal Mund emphasized the importance of keeping the washrooms open for the many families who visit. “We see 20-30 kids there every day,” he noted. He also suggested installing cameras to deter vandalism.
City council has approved the new operating hours for the washrooms, which will run daily from June 16 to October 17, 2025, with funds coming from last year’s budget.
Finance Award
The city recently earned the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for its 2023 Annual Report. This marks the 15th consecutive year of recognition, showcasing the city’s commitment to financial transparency.
Sundog Festival
The Sundog Festival in Vernon is set to have extended music hours this year, now running until 10 p.m. This adjustment allows the festival to provide entertainment for an extra hour after relocating from Polson Park to Civic Memorial Park due to construction.
Initially, the city allowed music until 9 p.m. because of the neighborhood’s quieter nature. However, Councillor Mund argued that the disruption would be minimal. “There are only seven houses around the area,” he explained, advocating for the festival’s lively atmosphere.
The council approved this amendment, ensuring a vibrant end to the Sundog Festival nights.
Annual Report
With ongoing discussions about park safety and community events, it’s clear that local governance is focused on enhancing public spaces and ensuring transparency. As more citizens get involved, we can expect even greater improvements and initiatives in Vernon.
