Nine young athletes from the Vernon Rowing and Dragon Boat Club (VRDBC) recently made waves at a regatta in Vancouver, bringing home eight medals—five gold and three silver. This event, part of the Delta Deas Scholastic Regatta held on May 24-25, saw them competing with 228 crews from around the province, showcasing their hard work and dedication.
On the first day, Peter Masys and Leo Middlekamp showed their skill in the U17 men’s doubles. They set the pace by winning their time trial with a fast time of 3:40.41 and then took gold in the final with an impressive 3:35.18.
In the mixed doubles, Cole O’Connor and Sierra Munroe also stood out, winning both their heat and the final. Later, Munroe teamed up with Aida Mills in the U19 women’s pair to grab another gold with a time of 4:00.30. O’Connor rounded out the day by winning the U19 men’s double event alongside 16-year-old Ryland Holmgren. Their teamwork paid off with another medal.
Other highlights from Saturday included Amy Milne finishing 15th in the U19 women’s single time trial and Anthony Masys claiming third in the U15 men’s single heat. Kate Green made her mark as well, finishing sixth in the women’s novice singles final.
On Sunday, the momentum continued. Masys won gold in the U17 men’s singles. Meanwhile, O’Connor took home another gold in the U19 men’s singles, clocking in at 3:33.74. Munroe and Milne added more medals to their count, finishing in silver place after winning their U19 women’s 2x heat.
This event not only highlights the individual talents of these young athletes but also illustrates the growth of rowing as a competitive sport among youth. According to recent statistics from Rowing Canada, youth participation in rowing has increased by over 20% in the past five years, showing a rising interest in water sports.
