On the opening day of the Canadian U-Sports Swimming Championships, Alexanne Lepage shined brightly for the Calgary Dinos. The Vernon’s athlete bagged two gold medals and a silver, showcasing her talent at the Varsity Pool in Toronto.
The Dinos, with their impressive performance, currently sit in second place in the women’s competition as they approach Friday’s events. The championship will wrap up on Saturday.
“We had a good night overall,” said Mike Blondal, the Dinos’ head coach. “While we missed a few races in the morning, our team bounced back with strong performances, personal bests, and those gold medals from Alexanne and Nicholas Duncan. Day 1 was a success, and I’m excited for the upcoming races.”
Alexanne, a graduate of the Vernon Kokanee Swim Club, dominated the 100-meter breaststroke. She led from start to finish, clocking in at 1 minute 5.79 seconds. She continued her success by winning the challenging 400-meter Individual Medley, taking control during the breaststroke segment and finishing with a time of 4 minutes 42.17 seconds.
To top off the day, the women’s relay team, which included Lepage, Hannah Bennett, Eliza Housman, and Hannah Johnsen, secured a silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle, finishing in 3 minutes 44.54 seconds.
Two other swimmers from the Vernon Kokanee Club are also competing in Toronto. Kelsey Fillion represents the University of Manitoba, and Ryan Murphy is part of the Victoria Vikes’ men’s team.
