Max Verstappen has shared his thoughts on the new Formula 1 cars after testing the latest Red Bull in Bahrain. He didn’t hold back, saying the cars are “not fun to drive” and compared them to “Formula E on steroids.”
During his second day of the three-day Bahrain test, Verstappen completed 136 laps before letting teammate Isack Hadjar take over. Although Red Bull showcased strong performance, Verstappen focused more on how these cars feel behind the wheel, noting the increased emphasis on managing energy.
He remarked, “It’s not very Formula 1-like. It feels more about management than full-on racing.” Verstappen mentioned that as a driver, he thrives on pushing the limits, but with the current setup, that’s not possible. He expressed a longing for a more traditional racing experience, where drivers can go all out without worrying about energy depletion.
Verstappen pointed out, “Honestly, the car looks good, but everything else feels a bit anti-racing.” He’s aware that his candid comments might not sit well, but he believes it’s important to speak his mind, especially when discussing the car’s performance.
While praising the hard work of his team, including those at Red Bull Powertrains, he acknowledged that it pains him to critique the work put into the car and engine. “I know there’s a lot happening behind the scenes, so it’s hard to say these things,” he admitted.
Moreover, Verstappen has previously expressed concern about the 2026 regulations. He believes that the enjoyment factor may influence his future in F1, especially as he considers options outside the sport. “A winning car is great, but it also needs to be fun to drive,” he emphasized.
