Bright sunshine greeted hundreds of residents during the Kelowna Pride March on May 31. This year marks a special milestone, as Kelowna is celebrating Pride for an entire month for the very first time, moving from its previous one-week celebration.

The festivities kicked off with an entertaining event on Friday night at Red Bird Brewing, where the Kelowna’s Next Drag Superstar finale took place. The following day, Stuart Park filled with excitement as the annual march began, leading into City Park for the festival.

Before the march, performers Freida Whales and Kayla the Contortionist delighted the crowd. Community leaders, including newly elected MP Stephen Fuhr, shared inspiring messages about inclusion and acceptance. Once the speeches concluded, participants marched from Stuart Park along the scenic waterfront to City Park, where the festival unfolded.

At the festival, attendees enjoyed live music, captivating drag performances, delicious food from local trucks, and unique artisan goods. There were also many family-friendly activities, creating a vibrant atmosphere for everyone.

Kelowna Pride Month, recognized officially by the city, runs from May 30 to June 30. This expanded celebration not only reflects a growing acceptance of diversity but also highlights the community’s commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ individuals.

Recent surveys indicate a significant increase in public support for LGBTQ+ rights in Canada. A 2022 study showed that 75% of Canadians now believe in full equality for LGBTQ+ people, a remarkable change over the past decade. This shift in attitude is reflected in events like Kelowna Pride, where inclusivity and love are celebrated.

Social media was abuzz during the festivities, with many sharing their experiences and joy online. Videos on platforms like TikTok showcased the vibrant activities and enthusiastic participants, making it clear that the community is coming together like never before.

Celebrating Pride fosters understanding and promotes acceptance, showing that love and support can thrive in every corner of our communities.
