Adnan Syed, who spent over 20 years behind bars for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, will continue to stay free. A judge in Baltimore ruled on Thursday to reduce his sentence to time served.
This decision marks a significant moment in a case that gained massive attention in 2014, thanks to the popular podcast “Serial.” The first season questioned Syed’s conviction for the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, an 18-year-old student. The podcast was downloaded more than 100 million times in its first year and played a key role in bringing his case back into the spotlight.
Last week, prosecutors withdrew their motion to vacate Syed’s murder conviction. In 2022, another judge had already released him after vacating that conviction, but legal battles continued, leading to his conviction being reinstated. Following a directive from Maryland’s highest court last year, the hearing that led to his initial release was redone.
Judge Jennifer Schiffer, who oversaw this hearing, concluded that Syed, now 43, “is not a danger to the public.” She stated that the interests of justice would be better served by recognizing the time he had already served. As part of her decision, Syed will be under five years of supervised probation.
However, the ruling faced criticism from the family of Hae Min Lee. Her mother and brother wanted to keep Syed’s life sentence intact. Lawyer David Sanford, representing the family, expressed disappointment, stating, “Absolutely nothing changes the fact that Mr. Syed remains convicted of first-degree premeditated murder due to overwhelming evidence.” He urged Syed to take responsibility for his actions and show genuine remorse.
