Victory for Little League Player Suspended Over Bat Flip: How His Family Fought Back Legally

A 12-year-old Little League player, Marco Rocco, was recently allowed to play in the New Jersey state finals after a court ruling cleared him of a one-game suspension. Marco had been suspended for unsportsmanlike conduct following a bat flip after hitting a home run during a game on July 16.

Judge Robert G. Malestein quickly ruled in Marco’s favor, emphasizing that the suspension could cause irreparable harm, as he couldn’t regain the lost opportunity to play in such an important match. The decision came after his father, Joe Rocco, filed an emergency restraining order in the Gloucester County Chancery Division to overturn the suspension.

Marco’s team, Haddonfield, faced Elmora in their first game of the tournament. Although he struck out in his first at-bat, the game ended poorly for Haddonfield, losing 10-0. They have another chance to advance playing against Ridgewood next.

Little League International acknowledged the court’s decision, expressing disappointment that the situation detracted from the positive experiences the tournament aims to create. While they have rules against unsportsmanlike behavior, they previously showcased bat flips in their promotions, which raised questions about the consistency of their enforcement.

Joe Rocco expressed his frustration, noting that his son dreams of playing in the Little League World Series. Marco has dedicated much of his life to the sport, and being sidelined right before a critical game was heartbreaking for the family.
