Viken Shines as University Advances to 3A Baseball Semifinals: A Thrilling Journey to Victory!

Greeley – Last year, Gage Viken played a supporting role in the University baseball team’s chase for the Class 3A semifinals. This year, as a junior, he stepped up as a key player from the start.

Viken delivered a stellar performance, pitching a complete game. He allowed just three hits and only one earned run while striking out nine batters, leading the Bulldogs to a 5-2 victory over Resurrection Christian. The Bulldogs, with an impressive record of 24-3, will face Coal Ridge, who recently achieved an upset by defeating Eaton.

“I thrive under pressure,” Viken shared. “I felt focused and ready against both Coal Ridge and Resurrection.” His early contributions included a key two-RBI single in the first inning, which set the tone for the game.

The Bulldogs needed that strong start. After a tight win against Valley, they waited on the field while the Cougars battled Montezuma-Cortez, clinching a narrow 1-0 victory.

University’s coach, Casey Miller, praised Vaughn Green, the Cougars’ pitcher, noting, “He’s a force on the mound. The team rallies around him.” Despite fielding challenges, including three errors in the first three innings, the Bulldogs managed to adjust defensively as the game progressed.

In the second inning, the Cougars scored their first run, narrowing the gap. A triple later allowed them to pull within one run, but the Bulldogs sealed their victory with two runs in the sixth inning.

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs will face a Coal Ridge team that recently made waves by defeating Eaton, snapping their lengthy winning streak in the state tournament. Eaton hasn’t lost since May 2019, when they were edged out by Lutheran. The Titans are on a strong roll, having earned an 8-0 win over Eaton to reach the semifinals.

“Even without him pitching tomorrow, Ben Simons is a strong player,” Viken noted. “He can hit and play a pivotal role.” The Bulldogs still have talent in reserve with Joel Ramirez and Will Korby available for pitching duties.

This weekend’s matchups will be pivotal. Valley is gearing up to face Montezuma-Cortez in an elimination game, with the winner set to take on Eaton. Meanwhile, Delta and TCA will also battle, with the stakes high for both teams.

To beat potential weather challenges, game times have been adjusted to start earlier. First pitches are now set for 9 a.m. and subsequent games will follow at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

As excitement builds, fans are eager to see how these teams perform under pressure. The intensity of the tournament showcases not only talent but the heart and determination of young athletes as they strive for victory.
