The Vikings held their annual night practice at TCO Stadium, and fans showed up in droves, decked out in purple. The weather was just right for a night of football.
All eyes were on J.J. McCarthy, the Vikings’ young quarterback. After a standout performance in a recent practice, he had a mixed night this time. The evening kicked off with some 7-on-7 drills. McCarthy looked good, connecting with Jalen Nailor multiple times, including a great throw over the middle. His only incomplete pass came from a dropped ball by Nailor.
However, things changed when the 11-on-11 period began. McCarthy faced significant pressure from the defense, which has been strong throughout training camp. Despite a few nice moments, like a tight throw to Josh Oliver, moving the ball proved tough for the offense. McCarthy struggled to connect with Addison, and the offensive line was missing key players, which added to the difficulties.
During one tough series near the goal line, McCarthy stumbled but managed to escape pressure. Yet, he faced a few challenges, including a high throw to Nailor and a failure to connect on a short pass to Oliver.
Later, in a focused effort to move the ball, McCarthy mostly opted for checkdowns and runs. He took a sack in the red zone but also made a strong scramble that nearly resulted in a touchdown. His final throw of the practice was a touchdown pass to Addison.
It’s important to note that the Vikings practiced without two starting offensive linemen and top receivers Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson. This certainly impacted the offense’s flow. McCarthy’s challenges stemmed not just from him, but from the overall team situation against a strong defense led by Brian Flores.
On a positive note, McCarthy showcased his speed and athleticism during scrambles. He ran for over 500 yards in his last two seasons at Michigan, suggesting he could be a unique dual-threat quarterback for the Vikings. If he keeps it up, he could break a 20-year-old team record for rushing yards by a quarterback.
Focusing on kicking, Will Reichard had a redemption night. After missing kicks in previous practices, he nailed all six attempts, including several over 40 yards. With a perfect effort, he improved his camp stats to 19 for 24 overall.
As the Vikings take an off day, fans will be eager to see how the team evolves in the coming sessions.
