EAGAN, Minn. — Young quarterback J.J. McCarthy is facing tough times early in his career. Coach Kevin O’Connell announced Monday that McCarthy showed concussion symptoms and underwent tests late Sunday. He has been placed in the protocol.
“He’ll go through that process this week,” O’Connell said. “He’s been in meetings and is here today. We’ll keep you updated.”
O’Connell didn’t rule McCarthy out for the upcoming game against the Seahawks, but the Vikings usually avoid rushing concussed players back within a week. McCarthy has missed valuable practice time this season, which makes it difficult for him to play effectively.
If McCarthy can’t play, undrafted rookie Max Brosmer may start. Brosmer has impressed coaches since joining the team, taking on backup duties for several weeks. The team also has veteran John Wolford on the practice squad.
This latest injury adds to concerns about McCarthy, who struggled through a torn meniscus last summer and a high ankle sprain earlier this season. O’Connell mentioned that they weren’t sure when the concussion symptoms started.
“It’s definitely not ideal,” O’Connell said. “And really, that phrase can apply to several stops on his journey so far.”
McCarthy’s performance this season has been disappointing. In his most recent game, he completed only 12 of 19 passes for 87 yards and threw two interceptions. His completion rate stands at just 54.1% over six starts. Advanced stats show he’s near the bottom among quarterbacks since 2000, with only JaMarcus Russell ranking lower in expected points added per dropback.
Minnesota’s 4-7 record isn’t all McCarthy’s fault. The team has seen dropped passes, an unreliable offensive line, and special teams mistakes, making the offense’s struggles even more frustrating. Superstar receiver Justin Jefferson expressed this frustration, saying, “It’s frustrating to lose. We’ve got to figure it out.”
Some teammates believe in Brosmer. During preseason, he held his own against the Tennessee Titans’ first-team defense and showed strong decision-making. His style has drawn comparisons to Brock Purdy’s rise in San Francisco. O’Connell noted his confidence in Brosmer, recalling his strong preseason performance.
If McCarthy is sidelined, Brosmer will have a chance to prove himself, potentially reshaping the team’s future. The Vikings face tough decisions about their quarterback situation, especially as they try to stabilize an aging roster under financial constraints.
As O’Connell puts it, “It’s a journey, and we’re all learning along the way.”
