India’s economic growth needs to go hand in hand with its higher education system, according to G. Kannabiran from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). He spoke during a recent conference at NIT, Trichy, where he highlighted a vital point: as India aims to become the world’s third-largest economy by the end of this decade, it must also improve its educational infrastructure.
Kannabiran emphasized that the vision for “Viksit Bharat 2047” is more than a goal; it’s a stepping stone for India’s future. He quoted Prime Minister Modi’s recent statements in Parliament about the long-term impact of today’s policies, which could shape the nation for the next thousand years.
Despite the ambition, Kannabiran pointed out a striking fact: only a handful of Indian universities rank among the top 100 globally. There’s a noticeable lack of stability in institutional growth, which is crucial if India is to develop a robust higher education system. He believes the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the proposed Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhisthan (VBSA) Bill, set to replace outdated regulatory bodies with a more streamlined system, are key to this transformation.
Currently, only 20% of colleges and 45% of universities seek accreditation. This reveals a significant gap in institutional quality, suggesting that many educational providers are not held to rigorous standards. The NEP 2020 and the VBSA Bill aim to bridge this gap by enforcing quality checks and fostering growth.
According to a recent survey by the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE), India has over 1,000 universities, but many lag in research output and innovation. This puts India at a disadvantage, especially in the global education landscape. If India aims to compete globally, it must invest not just in numbers, but in quality.
