Villanova University Introduces Willard as the New William B. Finneran Endowed Head Coach for Men’s Basketball

Kevin Willard is stepping into a new role as the head men’s basketball coach at Villanova University. With an impressive record of 335 wins over 17 seasons, he brings a wealth of experience to the Wildcats. He recently led the University of Maryland to 27 wins, a spot in the Top 25, and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Villanova’s President, Rev. Peter M. Donohue, noted that Willard not only stood out for his coaching success but also for his vision for Villanova Basketball as it adapts to changes in college athletics. His ability to align the team’s goals with the university’s mission was particularly impressive.

During his time at Maryland, Willard achieved 65 wins, including two NCAA appearances. His 2022-23 season saw the Terrapins finish with a 22-13 record, landing a spot in the NCAA tournament. The National Association of Basketball Coaches recognized his efforts by naming him the East District Coach of the Year in 2024-25.

“Coach Willard is a remarkable leader,” said Eric Roedl, Villanova’s Director of Athletics. Roedl is optimistic about the future with Willard at the helm, eager to integrate him and his family into the Villanova community.

Previously, Willard spent 12 successful seasons at Seton Hall, where he won 225 games. One memorable moment was his team’s Big East Tournament win in 2016 over Villanova, a team that soon after captured the NCAA national title. Willard is known for achieving four consecutive 20-win seasons, a first in Seton Hall’s history.

In his own words, Willard expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Villanova and emphasized the school’s rich tradition and strong basketball culture.

Before becoming a head coach, Willard launched his career as an assistant coach under Rick Pitino in the NBA and at Louisville. His coaching journey began at Iona, where he transformed a struggling team that had won just two games into a competitive program in just three years.

Willard, who hails from Huntington, New York, played college basketball as a point guard for his father, Ralph Willard. Ralph coached for 19 years, racking up 336 wins.

Kevin Willard succeeds Kyle Neptune, making him the tenth head coach in Villanova’s basketball history, which dates back to 1920. With his track record and leadership, there’s a sense of excitement about the new chapter for Villanova Basketball.
