Dubai: Virat Kohli has made history once more. On Tuesday, the former captain of the Indian cricket team became the player with the most catches in international cricket, covering all formats: T20s, ODIs, and Tests.
Kohli achieved this milestone during the semi-final of the ongoing Champions Trophy against Australia at the Dubai International Stadium. Australia batted first and scored 264 runs, thanks in part to a strong 73 from their captain, Steve Smith. With this performance, Kohli now holds the record with 335 catches from 559 international matches.
Before this match, Kohli was in second place with 333 catches, just behind former Indian captain Rahul Dravid. Dravid, known as “The Wall,” has 334 catches across formats, including two from his time with Asia XI and World XI.
Kohli’s landmark catch came when he snagged a ball from Jos Inglis in the cover area. Inglis tried to play it off the back foot, but Kohli made the catch look easy. He followed this up with another catch from Nathan Ellis, who attempted a big shot at long-on.
In the wider landscape of Indian cricket, Mohammad Azharuddin is third with 261 catches. Sachin Tendulkar follows closely behind with 256. Rohit Sharma, the current Indian captain, is fifth with 229 catches. Globally, only Ross Taylor, Ricky Ponting, and Mahela Jayawardene have more catches than Kohli.
This achievement underscores Kohli’s exceptional skills and dedication on the field, further cementing his legacy in cricket.
