Virginia State University Students Shine at FBLA National Leadership Conference: Success Stories and Highlights

Virginia State University (VSU) students showcased their skills at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) National Leadership Conference in Dallas. From May 31 to June 2, over 1,000 students from across the nation gathered to compete and network.

Among VSU’s standout performers was Sakara Calhoun-Bey, who topped the leaderboard by demonstrating exceptional networking skills. Other notable students included Jenayah Loveless, Amiyah Ponton, and Elijah Adams, all of whom exhibited dedication and competitive spirit throughout the event.

The conference featured over 38 business-related events, offering cash prizes and valuable learning workshops. Participants gained insights from industry leaders, including Astad Dhunjisha, AT&T’s VP of Human Resources. He spoke about adapting to change in today’s fast-paced job market, emphasizing that students should develop skills that will prepare them for future challenges.

Dr. Emmanuel Omojokun, dean of the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business, expressed pride in the students’ achievements, stating that their success reflects the high caliber of education at VSU. He emphasized that winning at a national level is a testament to what VSU stands for: excellence and opportunity.

This year’s competition was fierce, with almost 150 schools represented. A survey indicated that participants felt these events were key to building confidence and networking capabilities vital for their careers. Jennifer Woods, FBLA President and CEO, noted that students are leaving the conference not just with awards, but with new connections and a renewed sense of purpose.

The accomplishments of VSU students align with a broader trend. According to recent statistics, students involved in FBLA and similar organizations report higher rates of job readiness. A 2022 survey showed that 80% of FBLA members felt prepared for the job market, underscoring the importance of these experiences in shaping future leaders.

The FBLA’s mission is to foster leadership and prepare students for the workforce, and VSU’s recent accomplishments highlight this goal. Dr. Aurelia Donald, the chapter’s advisor, echoed the pride felt throughout the college, celebrating the students’ hard work and success.
