Virginia Wesleyan University is set to change its name to Batten University in July 2026. This change honors Jane Batten and her late husband, Frank Batten, who co-founded The Weather Channel. The decision was made unanimously by the Board of Trustees.
The Batten family has a long history with the university. Since their daughter, Mary, joined in 1978, they have contributed extensively. Their support includes the $22 million Jane P. Batten Student Center, the $80.3 million Batten Honors College, and the $20 million Greer Environmental Sciences Center. Every year, they also fund eight professors and offer scholarships to 160 students.
University officials didn’t disclose the total donations made by the Batten family due to their preference for privacy.
Scott Miller, the university president, praised Jane Batten, saying, “There is no other visionary philanthropist like Jane Batten. Her innovative ideas have transformed this university.”
Jane Batten is not just focused on her own university. She has also made significant contributions to other institutions in Virginia. In 2024, she donated $100 million to the University of Virginia, which is the largest donation in the school’s history. This gift is aimed at expanding their marine science program, reflecting her commitment to education and environmental science.
Statistics show that private donations to higher education have been on the rise, with a 2021 report noting that such donations exceeded $50 billion across U.S. universities. Philanthropists like the Battens play a crucial role in this trend, helping schools grow and improve facilities.
