Virginia Women’s Team Shatters NCAA 400 Medley Relay Record with Impressive 3:19.58 Performance!

The Virginia women’s swimming team is on fire. They keep breaking records and pushing the limits of the sport. This was especially evident during the women’s 400 medley relay at the 2025 ACC Championships. Their performance was nothing short of spectacular.

In an exciting race, the team members—Claire Curzan, Alex Walsh, Gretchen Walsh, and Anna Moesch—set an incredible NCAA record with a time of 3:19.58. They didn’t just break the previous record; they shattered it by over a second. The old record of 3:21.01 was also held by Virginia, set during the 2024 NCAA Championships. This was a historic moment, as no team had ever gone under 3:20 in this event before.

The strength of the Virginia team lies in their versatile swimmers. All four athletes can swim different strokes efficiently, allowing them to optimize their relay lineup. For example, Alex Walsh swam butterfly in this record-breaking relay, while Gretchen swam backstroke. This combination worked perfectly, with both swimmers clocking remarkable times.

Curzan took over the backstroke duties this time and set a personal best, finishing her leg with a time of 49.35. Meanwhile, Alex Walsh steamed through the butterfly leg in just 47.00, making it the fastest split in history. Just the previous month, she had set the bar with a time of 47.15 at the Eddie Reese Invite, where the team had also impressed by breaking the American record with a time of 3:21.48.

Freshman Anna Moesch also made a significant impact. Her freestyle split was faster than the previous record by 0.67 seconds, clocking in at 46.18. This shows how powerful the Virginia women’s team has become.

Earlier in the meet, they also broke the NCAA record in the women’s 800 freestyle relay. This means they now hold all five NCAA relay records. With G. Walsh leading off with an impressive time of 1:39.34, the Cavaliers have claimed every ACC swimming record. Their achievements at the 2025 ACC Championships mark them as an extraordinary force in collegiate sports.
