CASPER, Wyo. – On a typical Wednesday, retired schoolteacher Tracy Padilla is busy at the Food Bank of Wyoming. She skillfully navigates the warehouse, balancing a cart and a clipboard, eager to help those in need. Today holds special significance as it’s WyoGives Day 2025, a day aimed at encouraging community support for local nonprofits.
“WyoGives lets us give back to our neighbors and communities,” Padilla explained. Her years of teaching at North Casper Elementary made her acutely aware of food insecurity. “I often heard children say, ‘I haven’t eaten since yesterday.’ It became essential for us to ensure all kids have access to meals,” she recalled.
According to Executive Director Danica Sveda, the Food Bank primarily relies on private donations, especially since many federal funds have dried up in recent years. “We fundraise significantly on WyoGives Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This helps us provide meals during the summer when kids are home and families struggle,” she shared.
WyoGives also shines a light on local nonprofits. Research shows that community involvement massively boosts their visibility and funding. “With government support waning, nonprofits must find new ways to sustain their essential services,” Sveda remarked.
This year, WyoGives faced a challenge with a technical glitch, extending the donation period through noon Thursday. With around 430 nonprofits engaging in the drive, donors can explore a variety of organizations. The Hughes Charitable Foundation has also set up a $1 Million Incentive Pool, enhancing donations for qualifying nonprofits.
Statistics show that food insecurity affects 1 in 8 Americans, making the work done by organizations like the Food Bank more critical than ever. By focusing on community support, we can help tackle this pressing issue. Padilla’s dedication and the efforts of countless volunteers help bridge a gap that many families face daily.
