W-L Star Runner Chooses American University: Exciting Commitment Announcement!

Emmett Engelhardt, a senior athlete at Washington-Liberty High School, has made a big decision. He is set to join American University as a member of their Division I cross-country and track-and-field teams. Engelhardt has been active in sports year-round, balancing running and basketball with impressive results.

“I chose American because of their strong programs and the supportive culture among the teams,” Engelhardt shared with ARLnow. He also considered options like Bucknell and Colgate but found American to be the perfect fit.

Last fall, Engelhardt stood out as the top boys runner from all Arlington schools. He secured victories at the Monroe Parker Invitational and the Arlington County and Liberty District championships. His performance in these races placed him among the best runners in the region and at state level competitions.

Engelhardt’s success didn’t stop there. He also triumphed at the Octoberfest Invitational, making this past season one of the most remarkable for an Arlington runner in years.

In addition to his running, he played shooting guard for the boys varsity basketball team during the winter. “I loved the experience with my teammates and Coach Bobby Dobson,” he reflected. Playing basketball over four seasons has given him valuable teamwork skills.

As spring approaches, Engelhardt is gearing up for outdoor track season, starting with the Arlington County meet at Washington-Liberty. He is expected to excel in several distance races.

According to a survey from the National Federation of State High School Associations, participation in high school sports has been steadily increasing, highlighting the importance of athletics in youth development. Engaging in sports not only boosts physical health but also encourages teamwork and dedication, qualities that will serve Engelhardt well in college and beyond.

As he embarks on this exciting next chapter at American University, Engelhardt’s story is a testament to hard work and passion. It demonstrates how commitment to sports can pave the way to greater opportunities in life.
