Wake Forest Dominates Highlands Invitational to Capture Second Team Title!

WESTCHESTER, Ill. – The Wake Forest men’s golf team celebrated a fantastic win at the Highlands Invitational, clinching their second consecutive title. This victory marks an impressive 48th win for head coach Jerry Haas.

Wake Forest stood out by finishing the tournament eight strokes ahead of their nearest competitor. They achieved this with a final score of 840, or 24 under par, making them one of only two teams to finish below par. Their streak of six under-par rounds to kick off the season is a significant achievement, with their scores ranking among the top 25 in the program’s history.

Sophomore Jorge Hao shone brightly, earning his first collegiate title and tying for the fourth-lowest score to par in a 54-hole tournament since 1976. He ended with a remarkable score of 199, which is 17 under par. His performance included three rounds below par, notably two rounds of 65.

Behind Hao, teammates Tom Haberer, Kyle Haas, and Jakob Melin also contributed significantly. Haberer landed a career-best runner-up finish with a score of 204, including six birdies in his final round. Meanwhile, Haas shot a final round of 68, tying for third, and Melin achieved his personal best with a round of 69.

From Coach Haas: “The team played excellently during the final stretch. We finished the last three holes at seven-under, which sealed our win. Kudos to Jorge for his incredible first college victory! Starting the year at 24 under is impressive. It’s clear we have a talented group.”
