Walmart Heir Donates $115 Million to Arizona State University: A Game-Changer for Education!

Rob Walton, former chairman of Walmart and son of founder Sam Walton, has made headlines with a remarkable donation of $115 million to Arizona State University (ASU). This gift marks the largest in ASU’s history and aims to create the Rob Walton School of Conservation Futures, set to open in late 2025.

The new school will focus on providing training programs and certificates for a diverse group—including high schoolers, working professionals, and corporate leaders. The goal? To equip them with essential conservation skills that can be applied worldwide. In time, the school plans to expand its offerings to include both undergraduate and graduate degrees, working hand-in-hand with employers to develop pathways into conservation careers. ASU has shared that Walton’s generous donation will also fund a new chair position for the school, three named professorships, and the Rob Walton Scholars program. This scholarship fund will offer full and partial scholarships to students, further opening doors to education in conservation.

Michael Crow, the president of ASU, emphasized Walton’s ongoing support as crucial for the university’s leadership in sustainability. “There’s an urgent need to tackle the challenges facing our planet,” Crow noted. He also highlighted the opportunity to create innovative solutions by pooling creativity and resources.

In honor of this gift, ASU will rename its College of Global Futures to the Rob Walton College of Global Futures. This college includes various schools focused on future innovations and sustainability, such as the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and the School of Sustainability.

Recent studies show that environmental careers are on the rise, driven by increasing awareness of climate issues. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in conservation are projected to grow by 8% over the next decade, highlighting the relevance of Walton’s donation.
