As Elmo departs, HBO Family is also saying goodbye. This channel, which started in 1996 as a kid-friendly version of HBO, will close on August 15. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is cutting back on several channels, a move aimed at streamlining their offerings.

This isn’t just about HBO Family. Warner Bros. Discovery will also shut down the Cinemax channels: ThrillerMax, MovieMax, and OuterMax. This decision was first reported by Cord Cutters News after Spectrum informed users about the upcoming changes. Variety later confirmed the news.

Why is this happening? Viewership for traditional channels has dropped as more people turn to streaming services. Most of HBO’s audience now watches shows on HBO Max, which is set to be renamed soon. This cut aligns with WBD’s larger strategy to reduce the number of linear channels in its lineup as they prepare to divide the company.

Multiplex channels like HBO Family mainly show reruns and films from HBO, although HBO Family occasionally had original content aimed at children. As HBO moved its kids’ programming away from the main network, it found a home on HBO Family. Importantly, the channel did not air R-rated or TV-MA shows, making it a safe choice for families.

Currently, HBO still offers other multiplex channels like HBO2, HBO Signature, HBO Comedy, HBO Zone, and HBO Latino.

The Cinemax channels shutting down include ThrillerMax, which featured horror films since 1998; MovieMax, aimed at younger viewers since 2001; and OuterMax, which focused on sci-fi and fantasy, also launched in 2001. Despite these cuts, Cinemax continues to operate channels like MoreMax and ActionMax.

Experts suggest this shift reflects broader industry trends. According to a recent survey by media analytics firms, around 75% of viewers prefer streaming over traditional cable, marking a significant shift in how content is consumed. Social media shows mixed reactions, with many users lamenting the loss of family-oriented content while others embrace the flexibility streaming provides.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, watching how these changes impact family entertainment will be crucial. The shift highlights an ongoing transformation in the way we consume content, reminding us that adaptation is key in today’s digital age.
