Warner Bros Games is making some big changes. They are canceling the Wonder Woman game and closing three studios. This decision marks a new direction for the company.
The Warner Bros Discovery group shared this news with Deadline on Tuesday.
“We’ve had to make tough choices to focus our efforts on top franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones,” they explained. Three studios are closing: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros Games San Diego.
Monolith was working on the Wonder Woman title, which will no longer be developed.
The company emphasizes that these changes are not about the teams or their skills. They aimed to give fans the best experience possible with Wonder Woman, but that vision does not fit their current goals.
The decision to close Monolith, known for creating memorable games, was also a difficult one. They expressed gratitude for the passion and contributions of the team. Despite these challenges, Warner Bros aims to refocus on producing quality games and returning to growth by 2025.
The gaming division has faced struggles, especially after the success of Hogwarts Legacy earlier this year. Recently, David Haddad stepped down as president after a long tenure.
Creating games in-house can be costly and lengthy, leading many media companies to partner with third-party developers instead. Last year, they acknowledged a $100 million loss due to underperforming titles like MultiVersus, and CEO David Zaslav stressed the need for more consistent releases.
Zaslav also mentioned growing interest from others in Warner Bros’ intellectual properties, which they are considering.
Warner Bros Discovery is expected to reveal their fourth-quarter earnings this Thursday.
