The fight to save Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in Minneapolis is intensifying. Leaders warn that the hospital could close due to Medicaid cuts and budget issues. HCMC is a vital resource for the community, especially in emergencies.
Dr. Tyler Winkelman, a Fargo native, views HCMC as essential. “It’s a special place. We get to blend clinical work with cutting-edge research,” he shares. Beyond patient care, Dr. Winkelman focuses on statistics that reveal a concerning trend: one in ten Minnesotans suffers from at least two chronic health conditions.
In 2020, he co-founded the MN EHR Consortium, a unique database that tracks the health records of nearly every Minnesotan. The platform not only monitored COVID-19 but is now tracking cancer, depression, and other crucial health issues—right down to specific neighborhoods. “It’s a one-of-a-kind system in the U.S.,” he emphasizes.
HCMC also boasts advanced facilities like a hyperbaric chamber and a top-tier trauma center. Dr. Winkelman believes that maintaining a research institute here allows them to stay at the forefront of medical innovation. “We need to provide the latest treatments for our community,” he explains.
If HCMC were to close, Dr. Winkelman warns it would lead to a “public health crisis.” He insists the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. “We must find a solution to keep Hennepin Healthcare open.”
The future of HCMC rests with the state Legislature. Hospital leaders have noted some bipartisan support for a potential bill that could secure the hospital’s future, and they hope to have updates soon.

A study by the American Hospital Association found that nearly 50% of hospitals are operating at a financial loss, largely due to cuts in government funding and rising operational costs.
