Imagine snagging a brand new RTX 5090 for over $3,000, only to find it damaged due to melted connectors. This has happened again, with reports emerging of burned connectors on both the graphics card and the power supply unit (PSU). A Reddit user named Roachard shared a concerning experience with his MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC, purchased from Best Buy about a month prior. He paired it with a high-end Corsair SF1000L PSU and an Asus Strix B650E-I motherboard, both of which should easily handle such a power-hungry card.

Roachard connected the cable directly, without any extensions, and wasn’t overclocking the card. At first, he thought only the GPU was affected, but discovered that the PSU side was similarly damaged. The bulging connector on the power supply showed signs of severe melting, raising alarms about the quality and safety of these components.

This isn’t the first time such incidents have occurred. Earlier this year, another RTX 5090 experienced a similar meltdown, linked to a third-party cable. While that cable was supposed to meet the latest standards, the issue illustrates the risks associated with using non-standard parts. Roachard, however, was using the original 12VHPWR cable, believing it would prevent any problems. Yet, here we are, facing another alarming situation.

According to tech expert Der8auer, who investigated these melting cables, the problem often stems from uneven power distribution. His tests showed that some wires were carrying far more current than they were designed for, which can lead to overheating. He found that two wires could handle only 5 to 6 amps but were overloaded with more than 20 amps, while others barely carried any load.

These cable issues echo problems seen with the previous RTX 4090 models, where improper insertion of the cables led to serious overheating. The NVIDIA community remains vigilant, as these incidents could lead to broader concerns about the overall safety and reliability of high-performance graphics cards. Just last month, a survey indicated that nearly 40% of gamers are worried about GPU reliability and overheating risks.

As gamers invest heavily in these high-tech components, it’s crucial to stay aware of safety standards and ensure all connections are secure and properly rated.
