Warren Buffett, one of the most famous investors out there, is changing how he plans to give away his wealth. At 95, his net worth is around $150 billion, according to Bloomberg. While he isn’t the richest man anymore, he’s reflecting on his past giving and realizing that some of his grand ideas didn’t work out as he hoped.
In a recent letter to shareholders, Buffett shared his thoughts. He noted that he once had ambitious plans for philanthropy but found many of them impractical. He’s seen firsthand how poorly some wealth transfers can go, often due to politics or mismanagement.
Now, rather than sticking to a single grand plan, Buffett plans to give most of his wealth to his three children’s charitable foundations. Each year, they will distribute about $500 million to various causes.
Buffett made new donations recently:
- $750 million to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which gives scholarships to Nebraska students.
- $250 million to each of his children’s foundations:
- The Sherwood Foundation (led by Susie), which aims to improve life in Nebraska.
- The Howard G. Buffett Foundation, focused on food security and fighting human trafficking.
- NoVo Foundation, run by Peter, supporting marginalized communities.
He believes his children, now aged 72, 70, and 67, have the experience needed to manage his wealth wisely. Yet, he feels the urgency to act due to his longevity. He won’t give away all his Berkshire Hathaway shares just yet; he wants to ensure his successor is ready.
Buffett emphasized that he doesn’t want to control things from beyond the grave. He trusts his children have what it takes to handle a large fortune.
The Future of The Giving Pledge
Buffett’s shift raises interesting questions about the future of The Giving Pledge, which he co-founded with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates in 2010. This initiative encourages billionaires to donate at least half their wealth to charity. While Buffett promised to give over 99% of his fortune, only nine of the 256 signatories have met the pledge, according to a report this year.
Buffett has given over $60 billion so far, primarily to the Gates Foundation, which addresses poverty and health issues. However, reports indicate that his relationship with Gates has cooled. After Gates’ divorce from Melinda in 2021, Buffett stepped down from the board as the foundation faced challenges with bureaucracy.
Meanwhile, Gates and Melinda have ramped up their charitable efforts, planning to wind down their foundation by 2045. The landscape of billionaire philanthropy is shifting. Some, like MacKenzie Scott, are known for their rapid and generous giving, while others, like Elon Musk, are more reserved about public donation.
