Jonathan Kuminga appears set to stay with the Golden State Warriors as the new season approaches.
Recently, Tim Kawakami from The San Francisco Standard reported that the Warriors plan to keep him on their roster for the 2025-26 season. Despite some whispers about a possible sign-and-trade, it looks like that’s not the route the team wants to take. Kawakami noted, “Kuminga won’t be traded this summer.” He might either sign the Warriors’ offer or accept a one-year qualifying offer of $7.9 million.
The deadline for Kuminga to sign is October 1. He has hinted on social media that he might do so. Recently, he posted on Instagram, “I’ll bet on myself all day,” alongside a picture with his agent.
Last season, Kuminga had solid numbers, averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. His performance showed promise, making him a valuable asset for the team.
While discussions about a sign-and-trade with teams like the Kings and Suns have taken place, the Warriors seem unimpressed with proposals received so far. Team owner Joe Lacob reportedly values Kuminga and prefers to keep him than make a hasty trade.
Interestingly, there was previously a two-year, $45 million deal on the table for Kuminga, which he turned down. The sticking points were a team option for the second year and the removal of a no-trade clause.
Looking back at previous seasons, Kuminga’s journey reflects a trend in the NBA where young talents strive for better contracts. In 2020, for example, many players in similar positions sought favorable deals as they proved their worth. This context makes his current situation resonate with many in the league.
