Washington, DC – The Washington Commanders recently revealed their exciting partnership with HKS, a renowned global architecture firm. HKS will lead the design of the Commanders’ new stadium at the historic RFK site. This move is part of a major $2.7 billion investment that aims to revitalize 180 acres, turning it into an all-season hub for sports, entertainment, housing, and green spaces.
HKS has a rich history of creating standout sports venues. They designed famous stadiums like SoFi Stadium in California and AT&T Stadium in Texas, transforming the way fans experience games through innovative architecture and enhanced amenities.
Mark Clouse, the team’s president, expressed his enthusiasm: “Choosing HKS is a big step in bringing the Commanders back home to the District. They excel in crafting stadiums that benefit both fans and communities.” This vision aims to improve the fan experience while deepening ties with the local area.
HKS emphasizes designing stadiums that reflect their city’s essence. The new Commanders Stadium will focus on football, creating a dynamic atmosphere that enhances home-field advantages. It’s not just a stadium; it’s envisioned as a cultural landmark, connecting the city to the Anacostia River and fostering year-round activity.
Mark A. Williams, HKS’s Global Venues Director, shared, “We’re excited to celebrate the vibrant spirit of Washington, D.C. This site is unique in professional sports, and we’re eager to contribute to its rich history.”
The stadium will seat around 65,000 and host over 200 events annually, including sports, concerts, and community festivals. Design features will prioritize sustainability and enhanced fan experiences, leveraging advanced technology.
A key part of this project is creating new residential opportunities. Plans include building 5,000 to 6,000 homes, with a focus on affordable housing. The project aims to preserve parts of RFK, introduce youth sports facilities, and increase green spaces on-site, marking a significant investment in Washington, D.C.’s future.
Community feedback is crucial in this project. The next steps include working on design concepts with HKS and holding community meetings scheduled for this November and December. Construction is set to start in spring 2027, with a goal of completion by 2030.
