The Commanders have been on the lookout for a new QB coach ever since they announced David Blough’s promotion last week. Today, Adam Schefter and others revealed that D.J. Williams, son of Washington legend Doug Williams, has gotten the job.
D.J. Williams isn’t new to coaching. He began his NFL career in 2017 with the New Orleans Saints as a young assistant. By 2019, he stepped up to become an offensive assistant and stayed in that role until 2023. Recently, he was the assistant quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons before getting promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2025.
His hiring coincides with a shake-up in Atlanta, where the team recently fired head coach Raheem Morris. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich is also under scrutiny as various teams consider changes to their coaching staff.
D.J. marks the first addition to David Blough’s team, a move that fans are closely watching. Before D.J., the Commanders had interviewed Mike Bercovici, an assistant QB coach from the Panthers, for the position.
What makes this hiring special is the family connection. Doug Williams has been a key figure in the Commanders’ front office for years, adding an interesting twist as his son takes on this vital coaching role. D.J. also played quarterback at Grambling State, just like his father, and notably led his team to a championship win in 2011.
