SOUTH FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – Washington County is investing millions to improve safety for residents and emergency responders.

Currently, first responders rely on old radio technology, largely unchanged since the 1930s. Recently, firefighters at the South Franklin Volunteer Fire Department discussed upcoming changes.
Peters Township Chief Mike McLaughlin pointed out that communication issues already exist. “Some areas have a good signal, while others don’t,” he said.
This lack of reliable communication can endanger both those in need and the responders trying to help.
“Our radios are our lifeline,” McLaughlin noted. Emergency calls and requests for help depend on this technology. If a police officer finds themselves in trouble, they must have a working signal to call for assistance.
Washington County Commissioner Nick Sherman acknowledged the problem. He highlighted a serious scenario: “What if an officer is in a critical situation and can’t get signal for backup?”
To solve this, the county is using $25 million from the American Rescue Plan to upgrade the system from analog to digital.
“This is the largest and most crucial project Washington County has ever undertaken,” Sherman said.
The new radios promise improved signal coverage across a larger area. McLaughlin understands the community’s concerns: “Many have questions, and it’s natural to be skeptical about changes.” Officials held a two-hour meeting to address these questions, focusing on connectivity and costs.
“There are rumors about huge costs for municipalities,” Sherman stated firmly. “That’s not true. We have everything covered—from towers to radios.”
The fire chief shared that while he doesn’t expect the number of radios to increase, the department doesn’t need more than necessary.
After the meeting, many attendees felt reassured, though some still worried about potential costs for their departments.
