Hawaii conservation officers are looking into an incident where a man from Washington allegedly threw a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal in Maui. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources received reports of the harassment near Lahaina after videos surfaced on social media showing the act.
In a video shared with KOMO News, the man is seen picking up a sizable rock from the beach and throwing it toward the seal. The rock hit the animal, causing it to jump out of the water in response.
Authorities quickly located a 37-year-old man who matched witness descriptions. After contacting him, they informed him of his rights, but he opted to remain silent and request an attorney. Although he hasn’t been charged yet, the investigation will be referred to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement. Hawaiian monk seals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, making it illegal to harm or harass them.
