Even though astronauts can’t be home for Christmas, they are making it special in space. Four crew members aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are sending warm wishes back to Earth. NASA astronauts Mike Fincke, Zena Cardman, Chris Williams, and Kimiya Yui from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) shared a sweet video message from 250 miles above us.
“Greetings to planet Earth, all our friends and family,” said Fincke. “We’re thinking of you during this holiday season.” It’s bittersweet for the crew, as they miss their families but find comfort in their space family. Fincke added, “It’s a little sad not to be with our families, but we are with each other.”
The astronauts find unique ways to celebrate. Williams, who joined the crew around Thanksgiving, mentioned, “We’ve got a little tree and some decorations here.” The ISS has seen Christmas celebrations for 25 years, but this isn’t the first holiday in space. The first Christmas away from Earth happened in 1968 during the Apollo 8 mission.
Cardman, a geobiologist, expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s special to share the holidays with our space family and with the teams on the ground.” She acknowledged the support of their families and Mission Control, who also sacrifice during the holidays.
Yui plans to bring a taste of Japanese culture to the celebration, saying he’ll share festive Japanese dishes. Together, they aim to make this time memorable despite being far from home.
With a mix of tradition and creativity, these astronauts show that even in space, the spirit of the season is alive. Their message to everyone back home is simple yet heartfelt: “Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!”
